 Acne & Breakouts

Skincare for breakout-prone skin without throwing everything at it.

If your skin is breaking out, the answer is not always another acid, scrub or “acne” product. At Freya, we keep things simple: support the skin, build a consistent routine and choose products based on what your skin actually needs.

First things first: Not every breakout is the same

Acne can look similar on the surface, but what is driving it can be very different.

That matters, because treating every breakout the same way can make things worse.

  • Close-up of a person's cheek and jawline showing active acne with red blemishes, blackheads, and pustules.

     Acne vulgaris

The most common form of acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots and deeper breakouts. Oil, dead skin cells and Cutibacterium acnes can all play a part.

  • Close-up of a person's lower face showing severe acne, pustules, and blemishes on the cheek, jawline, and chin.

     Hormonal breakouts

Hormones can trigger or worsen acne, particularly around periods and other hormonal changes. Not every chin or jaw breakout is automatically hormonal.

  • Close-up of a person's forehead showing active acne blemishes and redness, with eyebrows, eyes, and hair visible.

    Fungal acne

Often called fungal acne, Malassezia folliculitis is caused by yeast rather than the same process as acne vulgaris. It often appears as lots of small, similar bumps and can be itchy.

  • Extreme close-up of a person's nose and surrounding skin showing visible blackheads and pores, likely demonstrating a skincare or cosmetic result.

     Blackheads are not dirt

A blackhead is a clogged follicle that remains open at the surface. Scrubbing harder does not make the skin cleaner and can actually increase irritation.

  • Close-up of a woman's face showing dry, flaky skin on her cheek and forehead, likely demonstrating the effects of a skincare product or treatment.

     Stop stripping the skin

More acids, stronger cleansers and constant exfoliation are not always better. Breakout-prone skin still needs hydration and barrier support.

 Build the routine first

You do not need ten products.

For most breakout-prone skin, we would start with:

Treatments for Acne & Breakout-Prone Skin

Homecare is one part of the picture.

Depending on your skin, we may also recommend professional treatments.

  • A facial skincare treatment in progress, with a therapist applying a white cream to a client's face using a brush. The therapist wears dark gray scrubs and white gloves, while the client lies on a treatment bed with a gray headband and blanket.

     Acne Facial

A facial designed for congested and breakout-prone skin.

    Best for:

    • congestion
    • blackheads
    • blocked pores
    • oiliness
    • breakouts

  • A spa treatment scene with a therapist applying a textured beige facial mask to a client lying on a treatment bed in a warmly lit salon.

     DMK Enzyme Therapy

A more advanced treatment that may be used as part of a longer-term skin programme.

  • A spa treatment scene with a therapist applying a facial mask or cream to a client's face using a brush, with skincare bottles and towels visible in a warmly lit treatment room.

     Sculpt & Soothe

If the skin is irritated, over-treated or reactive, sometimes the first job is simply to calm it down.

Sculpt & Soothe can be a better starting point when the skin needs hydration and barrier support rather than another strong active treatment.

  • A beauty therapist applies a cosmetic treatment to a client's face in a spa setting. The therapist, wearing dark gray scrubs and pink gloves, holds a silver-handled device with a blue tip.

     Microneedling

Microneedling is not for active acne.

It may be considered for suitable post-acne scarring once active breakouts are under control.
