What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel uses professional acids to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin and encourage fresher, smoother-looking skin underneath.

The Ameson Mesopeel system includes individual AHA peels such as mandelic, lactic and glycolic acid, as well as targeted acid combinations for concerns including acne, oiliness, pigmentation and photoageing.

The important thing is that we don’t simply choose the “strongest” peel.

We choose the one that makes sense for your skin, your concern and your previous experience with acids.

  • Mandelic Acid Peel

    Gentle exfoliation for sensitive, congested or uneven skin.

    Mandelic Acid 40% provides a milder form of chemical exfoliation and is particularly useful when we want to work on the skin without jumping straight into a stronger peel.

  • Lactic Acid Peel

    Exfoliation with a stronger focus on hydration.

    Lactic acid is useful when the skin needs exfoliation but is also dry or dehydrated.

    It provides a milder exfoliating action than glycolic acid while helping support hydration.

  • Glycolic Acid Peel

    Stronger resurfacing for texture, lines and dullness.

    Glycolic acid provides more intensive exfoliation and may be selected when we want to work more strongly on skin texture and visible ageing.

  • Pure Skin Peel

    For oily, congested and breakout-prone skin.

    Pure Skin is not a single acid.

    It combines succinic, pyruvic, azelaic and salicylic acids and is designed specifically around oily and acne-prone skin.

  • Bright Skin Peel

    For pigmentation, uneven tone and sun damage.

    Bright Skin is a targeted acid cocktail rather than one individual acid.

    It combines ingredients including tranexamic acid, 4-hexylresorcinol, ferulic acid, phytic acid and azelaic acid.

  • Azelaic & Mandelic Peel

    Gentle exfoliation for breakouts, redness and uneven tone.

    This combines 17% azelaic acid with 17% mandelic acid.

  • Is a Chemical Peel right for me?

    A chemical peel may suit you if:

    ✓ Your skin looks dull or tired
    ✓ You have congestion or excess oil
    ✓ You have post-breakout marks
    ✓ Pigmentation or uneven tone is a concern

    If your skin is very irritated, reactive or your barrier is compromised, we may recommend calming it first.

  • What happens during the treatment?

    1. Cleanse Your skin is cleansed and assessed.

    2. Prep Ameson Pro-Peel Lotion prepares the skin before the peel is applied.

    3. Peel The most suitable peel is applied and carefully timed for your skin.

    You may feel warmth, tingling or prickling.

    4. Neutralise The peel is neutralised where required.

    5. Calm & hydrate A Bio-Cellulose Mask and Calming Bliss are used to soothe and hydrate the skin.

    6. Protect We finish with SPF 50.

  • What will my skin look like afterwards?

    This depends on the peel used and your skin.

    You may experience:

    ✓ Mild redness
    ✓ Warmth or sensitivity
    ✓ Tightness
    ✓ Some dryness
    ✓ Light flaking or peeling

    Not every chemical peel causes visible peeling.

    And more peeling does not automatically mean a better result.

    The aim is controlled professional exfoliation, not trying to make as much skin peel off as possible.

  • Is there downtime?

    There can be some mild downtime, depending on which peel is used and how your skin responds.

    Some clients experience very little other than temporary redness, while others may notice dryness or flaking afterwards.

    You will receive aftercare advice based on the peel we use.

  • Aftercare

    After a chemical peel:

    ✓ Keep your skincare gentle
    ✓ Do not pick or pull at flaking skin
    ✓ Avoid strong exfoliating products until the skin has settled
    ✓ Avoid unnecessary heat and irritation
    ✓ Wear SPF every day
    ✓ Follow the specific aftercare we give you

    Sun protection is particularly important after professional chemical exfoliation. The Ameson protocol finishes treatment with SPF 50 for this reason

  • How often should I have a Chemical Peel?


    You can book a one-off chemical peel or a course. For specific skin concerns, our supplier recommends six sessions with at least two weeks between treatments. We’ll assess your skin and goals before recommending a treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all chemical peels make your skin peel?

No.

You may have some dryness or flaking, but visible peeling is not the measure of whether the treatment has worked.

Will a chemical peel hurt?

You may feel warmth, tingling or prickling.

We monitor your skin throughout the treatment and each professional acid has its own maximum application time.

Which chemical peel should I book?

You don’t need to choose the acid yourself—we’ll select the most suitable peel after assessing your skin. If you’ve never had a professional peel or are unsure whether one is suitable, book a Skin Consultation first. If we’ve already recommended a peel for you, book Chemical Peel.

Can chemical peels help acne?

Certain peels can be useful for oily, congested and acne-prone skin.

The Ameson Pure Skin cocktail is specifically designed around acne, oiliness, enlarged pores and superficial acne marks.

Can a peel help pigmentation?

Yes, depending on the type of pigmentation.

Ameson Bright Skin is specifically formulated around hyperpigmentation, uneven tone and photoageing.

If your pigmentation is persistent or complex, however, I would start with a consultation.

Are chemical peels suitable for sensitive skin?

Some gentler options can suit sensitive skin. Mandelic Acid 40%, for example, is specifically positioned as a mild peel suitable for sensitive skin.

But “sensitive” covers a lot of different skin conditions, so we still need to assess whether a peel is appropriate.

Can I have a chemical peel before a holiday?

This is not something I would recommend booking immediately before a sunny holiday.

We are particularly careful with stronger peels around periods of increased sun exposure.

Do I need SPF afterwards?

Yes.

SPF is an essential part of chemical-peel aftercare.

How many treatments will I need?


This depends on your skin and goals. A one-off peel is available, while a course of six treatments may be recommended for more targeted results.
